TRAINING and upcoming HIKES for Duke of Edinburgh Award candidates
With Spring here, we have planned a training session and couple of hikes for this school year.
Training is being offered for Silver and Gold candidates on Thursday, May 7 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. in Gonzaga’s Learning Resources Room. Training must be done once at each award level; this three-hour session is considered a compressed training requirement. There is a charge of $15.
On Friday, May 29 there will be a 1 or 2 night hike, depending on what candidates require.
On Friday, June 5 there will be a 1, 2 or 3 night hike, depending on what candidates require. This will be the last opportunity for a Gold Qualifying hike this school year.
You must sign up by Wednesday, April 15 if you wish to join in training or either hike. A sign up sheet is on Duke lead, Gillian Browne’s door, Room 201.
- Equipment is available should you require a tent or backpack. Please indicate your needs when you sign up
- Health forms and consent forms will be collected mid-April and the hike routes and leaders will be shared closer to the hike dates.
- There will be a $20 charge for each of the hikes. This fee pays for equipment (water filtration, bladders, replacement of old/damaged gear,…), a contribution to the East Coast Trail, and Gold Award ceremonies for recipients.
A quick summary of conditions can be referenced at
Check your award level and see what you need.
Please encourage involvement among volunteer adults (teachers, hikers, leaders…). It’s a great opportunity to get outdoors, enjoy nature, and share skills. An updated code of conduct is required (every 12 months) in order to participate. The attached Letter requesting Certificate of Conduct waives the fee and the clearance letter is sent directly to the school.
- Details are at http://www.rnc.gov.nl.ca/services/CertificateConduct.html.
Thanks for your energy in the program and good luck!
