Petty Harbour to Bay Bulls Hike

Motion and Spout Path, East Coast Trail

May 29 – 31, 2015

This hike will be full of adventure and beauty – wave action at Motion Head, ponds, glacier erratics, the wave-powered geyser (The Spout), sea cliffs, a few sea stacks, an historic lighthouse, waterfalls and bald eagles.

The hike totals approximately 30 kms, so an average of 10 kms each day. It is considered difficult so be prepared!

Friday, May 29

10:30 a.m. The hike will start at 10:30 a.m. Plan to be on location by 10 a.m. Travel to Petty Hr. (take Route 10 to Petty Hr. Road) Once in Petty Hr. keep right onto Southside Road until the pavement ends. Note there is no public parking on Southside road. Parked vehicles will need to be left on the North side of the harbor, either in front of the Community Centre, or next to the community breakwater.

Saturday, May 30

9:30 a.m. For those hikers joining on Saturday for a one-night hike, it will start at 9:30 a.m. Plan to be on location by 9 a.m.Take Route 10 and turn onto Shoal Bay Road in Goulds. Park in the gravel area just past the bus turn around at the end of Shoal Bay Road. (GPS South 47.4363, -52.763). You will meet the group via Shoal Bay Road access; 6.3kms from trailhead to the coast (this section could be quite wet after heavy rains). The group will meet you on the coast at 12 noon and you’ll all travel together to The Spout.

Sunday, May 31

2 p.m. All hikers will be ready for a hearty meal at pick up in Bay Bulls! Drive Route 10 to Bay Bulls turning east at the blue hiker sign, then 2.4 km along North Shore Road to the end of the paved road. A short distance further, along the gravel road extension there are parking areas near the small cemeteries. (GPS South 47.3118, -52.7824).
